Workshop Description

Systems Engineering for Intelligent Transportation System Projects

The workshop will provide a high-level view of System Engineering.  The importance and benefits, and the implications for management will be discussed, as will basic systems engineering concepts in the context of ITS projects.  Specifically the workshop will include information on the Federal requirements for systems engineering as documented in Rule 940.11, the benefits of applying Systems Engineering and the organizational implications of its application in traditional project development and implementation processes, training and technical resources available to further your understanding of Systems Engineering and its application, and an overview and breakdown of the Systems Engineering process.  The workshop will help participants understand the benefits of applying systems engineering approaches as a means of developing quality systems. The Federal Transportation Administration (FTA) and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) have developed new guidance to advance Systems Engineering in the transportation community.  This day and a half Systems Engineering Workshop uses the new “FTA & FHWA Systems Engineering for Intelligent Transportation Systems: An Introduction for Transportation Professionals” guide as a primary reference to introduce systems engineering to management, ITS project managers, technical and project staff.  Group discussions will provide an opportunity for participants to share successes and challenges of implementing the system engineering process within their agency.
